THURSDAY ROUND UP -science

In science this week we learned about the uses of testing  pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity in a pond.  We found out the following:

  • A scientist would test dissolved oxygen to see how “healthy” a body of water is for animals and plants.(It’s their “air,” they need it to breath!)
  • A scientist would test turbidity to find out how ” clean” the body of water is.
  • A scientist would test pH to determine if the water is from acidic to basic or some where on the scale and what kind of life can be found there.

Please leave a comment if you know more about one of these subjects or have a question.

  1. Okay, I think I understand acidic – Its stuff like sardines, pickles, and processed sugar in food and decomposing material in soil, such as leaves and other plant matter. But, what is alkaline? Is it some sort of bland material? Here, I looked it up. Its basically what ever is not acidic. Its the opposite of acidic. Its that which is on the other end of the pH scale from acidic.

So, here’s my question – at what point does something move from acidic to alkaline on the scale? Is there a number for that or something? Also, what the heck does ph stand for anyway?
