A family trip to Ormond beach

My mom, dad and I  took a “road trip” to Ormond beach to see my Great Aunt Jewel, to celebrate her 90 th  birthday.
Her birthday was really fun, my cousins, my aunts and uncles, and even… most of my grandparents were there, the more the merrier.

The food and drinks we had for dinner at my great Aunt Jewel’s beach home that night was soup with carrots, shrimp, celery, potatoes and okra…and for drinks we had homemade iced tea with lots and lots of sugar…it was REALLY delicious/ awesome, the soup we had was actually called a ”low country boil.”and that was AWESOME!

We stayed at a beach front hotel and my great Aunt Jewel  LIVES, full time, in a beach front HOUSE, it’s actually the oldest house in Ormond Beach, awesome right; we spent one night there.

The next morning we ate breakfast, then said good bye to everyone, then left.

On the way back to Tallahassee we stopped once… I had to pee most of the way back  from a BIG cup of chai tea from starbucks.(and a cheese danish from starbucks too, but I didn’t have to pee from the cheese danish.)

I finally got  to pee when we got back to our house in Tallahassee. Over all ” I had a jolly good time” with everyone. (because I love EVERYONE in my family a lot)
That’s my awesome family trip.
THE END
-lilli…(who does not have to pee anymore)

Florida Map Tips and Tricks

cropped mapBelow is the collected wisdom of the 5th graders, after having spent their 4th grade year constructing an 8′ x 8′ wall map of Florida.  This is the advice they are passing on to current and future 4th graders.

  • Double check with your classmates, ALL the time!
  • Follow directions.
  • Always do “pencil first”!
  • Do not make any mistakes.  (I’m just kidding, but still try not to make any mistakes.)
  • You’re going to be outlining with sharpies, so keep your eyes peeled.
  • KISS (Keep It Simple Sillies)
  • Double check your work!IMG_6098
  • Take your time!
  • Work together.
  • Keep it simple.
  • “Contrast” is very important
  • Make your key in a column of landmarks, not in rows.
  • Make things tights and compact because there is going to be more cool things on the map than you can imagine!
  • When you make multiple copies of one thing, make them consistent.
  • Don’t make anything too wild and crazy with colors and designs (just makes it look complicated).
  • Use straight edges.
  • Make sure the whole map is legible.
  • Make sure the map has the “5 C’s of Keys” (Compactness, Columns, Contrast, Correctness, Consistency)IMG_6094
  • Always make the key too big at the beginning – cutting off is better/easier than adding on.
  • Always capitalize counties, states, cities or any other thing.
  • Always keep track of your thumbtacks. They Hurt!
  • Don’t be afraid to ask a friend about what your making for the Florida map to see if she/he has anything to add or help you with.
  • Making the Florida map is hard, but ALWAYS have fun with everything you’re doing.
  • Ask your teacher how to do a really good job at whatever you’re doing, because the teacher how for you to do your best!
  • KISS (Keep It Simple Sillies – keep it easy to read and to look at)IMG_6103
  • Make sure the colors you use have contrast.
  • Put in effort, take your time and do a quality job.
  • Remember that it will take the whole school year.
  • Find safe ways to get up high.
  • Take your time, because you may be cutting until your hands are numb.
  • Make the key big.
  • Listen to others.
  • Always do pencil first!
  • Get a 2nd opinion before making anything permanent.
  • Have fun and use lots of glue.IMG_3564 copy
  • Do a top knotch job and try your hardest on the area of the map you are working.
  • Remember the 5 C’s of Keys: Consistency, Contrast, Columns, Correctness, Compactness.
  • Use your resources!
