Behind The Scenes Marketing “Scheme”
On Jan29th a Friday, the 4th,5th, and 8th graders of Cornerstone Learning Community put on a “Haitian Food For Haitian Lives” fundraiser, to help raise money for Haiti after the earthquake hit. Two of our teachers here at school have some relashion to the subject, Miss Small the 4th grade teacher is from Jamaica, and Miss Janviar the social studies teacher she happens to be part Jamaican and Haitian now for the info.
I am writing on how they got they got the word out . Its the day before the event, children are scurrying around the room putting last min touches on there posters, now some quotes from the kids,5th grade student Jay,”Well, you know its for a good cause and well you know its a GREAT way to stay in shape and well you know its for a good cause. Other student Wilson Abshire, does concer.
For most children this was not a horrible experience.The poster making was fun as student Lilli Hanks said “It was fun running around the school hanging up posters and what not.” Personally I thought getting the word out was easier than it would be, but it was still fun, with a total earning of $1200. With a total number of 75 students, in my perspective that’s a lot of money. student Augie Soder quotes ,”It was hard but it was fun.” That’s how we, the 5th,4th and 8th grade ,GOT THE WORD OUT.
Our Fundraiser, “Haitian Food for Haitian Lives” Review
Our class (with the co-op of 4th and 8th grades too) performed a great deed on Jan.29th, 2010.
We raised a a fundraiser we did, “Haitian Food for Haitian Lives,” raised $1300+, 100% of which will go to DWB (Doctors Without Boarders) and/or RC (Red Cross).
Thank You, if you attended, if not, well, it wasn’t exactly on national news.

Advise To Parents
- Do not bake child at 385 until golden brown.
- Do not let baby share pacifier with friends.
- Do not read (Steven King’s) The Stand as a bed time story.
- Make sure not to give it a taco bell “Volcano Double Beef Burrito“.
- Keep an eye on the baby.
- Do not give the baby a plastic bag.
- Do not sit on baby no madder how bad it’s being.
- Do Not let baby drive.
- When you bring your baby to the Doctor bring ear muffs to bloke out the crying.
- If you want your baby to go to sleep and she/he will not listen tell your baby not to go to bed and maby she/he will.
Tanzanian Proverbs
Today in class we are looking for proverbs from whatever country we are studying. There are many idioms and proverbs in African culture. I believe (and research supports this) that these idioms and proverbs were created to teach those who are younger in an simpler yet harder way. Simple because they are straight facts, and more difficult because they have to figure out what the proverbs mean on their own. Idioms and proverbs do not have to change as the society changes, they hold truth and fact over time.
Here are some of my favorite Tanzanian Proverbs:
- He who tells the truth, is never wrong.
- An empty sack can not stand.
- We start as fools and become wise through experience.
- The mouth of an elderly man is without teeth, but never without words of wisdom.
- To be happy in one’s home is better than being a chief.
- The patient person eats ripe fruit.
- You will get hurt by talking about people behind their back.

The Sasses go to Colorado
The Sasses hate taking off in an airplane, but love the landing sensation.
When we got off the plane in Colorado I threw up from all the coke I had on the plane ride; it was awful.
Afterwards, we got on a bus that took us to a rental car agency, ware we got our rental car. We got a white Highlander, which was very shiny.
On the ride to our cabin, the car got all muddy from the dirt road that we had been traveling on. When we got the to the cabin we unpacked and went out for dinner.
When we got to the restaurant we decided to eat outside, and let me tell you it was pretty cold compared to Florida! For dinner I had shrimp with a side order of salad. When the food came out I gobbled my salad down and I realized that that salad was the best salad I had ever had in my life. When my shrimp came out I almost upchucked the shrimp, it was horrible
. I had to go threw a whole week with a whole bunch of ups and downs. It was crazy!

My Family Trip to Yellow Stone
I’m going to tell you about a trip I went on with my family.We went to Yellow Stone.when we got to our hotel I saw how the rooms were very nice,but there was NO TV !!!( I was terrified).
So for entertainment Iwould lye on my back and think about what I could be doing back in back at my house in Tallahassee. But when we went out side I thought about what I couldn’t be doing back in Tallahassee.
There was snow falling from the somewhat light blue sky,and the constant pane in my back because of my 14 year old brother pelting me in the back with snow balls ( I was excited to turn around and pelt him with a snow ball ). At the same time I was feeling bad for my mom and dad who where back in Tallahassee ( I was there with my grandmother Jean and my brother Lars ).
I knew what would get my mind off of it a nice long snooze WOW !!! time fly when your being pelted with snow balls.
ONE DAY LATER
I woke up.
My brother and grandma where already awake and dressed I threw on some jeans, jacket , some glove’s, and a hat and we where off to go Rock Climbing.
When we got to the Grand Tea Tons my grandma left my brother and I with the Rock Climbing instector we hiked up the mountain and got to a somewhat flat spot with boulders 50 feet tall. The instructor tot my brother and I how to belay.
It was my turn to climb about 25 feet up the rock I started to slip I looked down to see if the instructor was watching me then I saw my brother was belaying me.
The boy who I fight with verbally and fiscally ,had my life in his hand’s . Luckily I made it home alive once I got home as SO SO SO SO SO SO SO excited to sleep in my personel bed once more.

Florida Map Tips and Tricks
Below is the collected wisdom of the 5th graders, after having spent their 4th grade year constructing an 8′ x 8′ wall map of Florida. This is the advice they are passing on to current and future 4th graders.
- Double check with your classmates, ALL the time!
- Follow directions.
- Always do “pencil first”!
- Do not make any mistakes. (I’m just kidding, but still try not to make any mistakes.)
- You’re going to be outlining with sharpies, so keep your eyes peeled.
- KISS (Keep It Simple Sillies)
- Double check your work!
- Take your time!
- Work together.
- Keep it simple.
- “Contrast” is very important
- Make your key in a column of landmarks, not in rows.
- Make things tights and compact because there is going to be more cool things on the map than you can imagine!
- When you make multiple copies of one thing, make them consistent.
- Don’t make anything too wild and crazy with colors and designs (just makes it look complicated).
- Use straight edges.
- Make sure the whole map is legible.
- Make sure the map has the “5 C’s of Keys” (Compactness, Columns, Contrast, Correctness, Consistency)
- Always make the key too big at the beginning – cutting off is better/easier than adding on.
- Always capitalize counties, states, cities or any other thing.
- Always keep track of your thumbtacks. They Hurt!
- Don’t be afraid to ask a friend about what your making for the Florida map to see if she/he has anything to add or help you with.
- Making the Florida map is hard, but ALWAYS have fun with everything you’re doing.
- Ask your teacher how to do a really good job at whatever you’re doing, because the teacher how for you to do your best!
- KISS (Keep It Simple Sillies – keep it easy to read and to look at)
- Make sure the colors you use have contrast.
- Put in effort, take your time and do a quality job.
- Remember that it will take the whole school year.
- Find safe ways to get up high.
- Take your time, because you may be cutting until your hands are numb.
- Make the key big.
- Listen to others.
- Always do pencil first!
- Get a 2nd opinion before making anything permanent.
- Have fun and use lots of glue.
- Do a top knotch job and try your hardest on the area of the map you are working.
- Remember the 5 C’s of Keys: Consistency, Contrast, Columns, Correctness, Compactness.
- Use your resources!
